Welcome to Interglot

As you can see, we are currently redesigning the Interglot website.

Interglot is currently under active development. So there may be times where something just doesn't work. If you see a problem that hasn't been fixed, please send us feedback.

Interglot Classic has been retired

Interglot as you knew it has been retired. It became too difficult to maintain. Security was a serious problem and the work necessary to fix it was too great.

Who is Interglot?

Interglot is an independent online translation dictionary based out of the Netherlands. It was originally developed in the '90s as a CD-ROM product. On a whim we dusted it off and made it available as a free online dictionary. To our surprise, the number of daily users grew and grew until Interglot became one of the top sites in the Netherlands.

Mission

Our mission is to be the most usable online translation dictionary.

New Features:

Improved Searching

We have greatly improved looking up words in the new version of Interglot:

  1. Alternate word forms -- You can now find the past tense of a verb or a plural noun.
  2. Accents are simplified -- It is no longer necessary to put two dots above the e or capitalize German nouns.

We feel that this makes the dictionary more usable for anyone trying to learn a language.

With our goal to make it as easy as possible to find the words you are looking for, we have taken great care to improve the search technology for Interglot. We have been adding plural and gender matching word forms. Much of this was done using an automated process, so it is possible for false matches and mistakes.

Autocomplete

To make it easier to find the words in our dictionary, we show you a list of words as you type.

Spell Checker

We use a basic spell checker to help catch simple spelling mistakes. When we cannot find a word, we try a variety of spelling variations and present you with the results. We plan to keep improving this technology so we can provide better and better suggestions.

Word and Sentence Splitter

Even though Interglot is not designed as a sentence translator, we try to give you a useful answer. If we do not have the exact phrase you are looking for, we will divide it up into the parts that we do have. The same goes for compound words. In languages like German, Swedish, and Dutch, it is frequently possible to divide compound words into their parts to get the correct translation. Although this does not always bring the correct result, we feel that it is better than giving you nothing at all.

Ratings

You can now rate translations. If you see a translation that is not correct, mark it with a 'X'. If you think a translation should be higher in the list, give it 3 stars. If enough people agree with you, it will move to the top.

Future Plans

Creating a community

We have thousands of loyal users visiting Interglot every day. Many of you are expert translators. Some of you are fluent in several languages. Some of you are students. Our goal is to bring you together so you can share your language experience, ask questions, and give feedback.

Improving the dictionary through community support

Oops, did we get the translation wrong? Make your own suggestions. You will be able to flag entries that have mistakes and review entries that others have made.

A login is not required

It is not required to login to Interglot to search for words. We plan on keeping as much of the site free from login requirements as possible. Yet, In order to allow you to get the most out of the new features we have planned, you will need to login.

We are exploring how Facebook can help improve the usability of Interglot.
